Chapter 5 Rescue Gone Wrong

Excerpt from Chapter 1

                In the distance, a news reporter’s voice was faint, “We have confirmed reports that a loin, who recently had cubs, escaped from the New York Zoo this afternoon.  The zookeeper is convinced that she is searching for her cubs that were taken away from her three weeks after they were born.  Please be advised, this animal is very dangerous.  If you see this lion roaming around your neighborhood call 1-800-SNAG, immediately or your local animal service…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                He felt alone; unsure of himself.  He needed a break from all that research and contemplate what had happened.  He just could not believe that he had a call from Sylar about the most unexpected event unimaginable—a bomb, but not just any bomb, a nuclear bomb.  He didn’t understand why Sylar called him, instead of someone else. If he had anyone else.  He didn’t think that was possible though.   All he could think about is if it were true. What if he had been telling the truth? What could he do? Alert the authorities that was one option, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it.  Instead, he called the man from the Company, the one with the glasses, Mr. Bennet. But he didn’t come.  Someone else came instead, a man with grey hair and an despondent look of secrets.
            He had gone on this break to think.  He had a choice, and yet again, he didn’t know what to chose.  Should he help this man named Thompson. Of course, he should, he had to help the girl with that mysterious illness. He had to stop Sylar, even if it meant losing himself in the process.
            He was walking along, minding his own surroundings and thoughts--until he heard something. Something so peculiar he didn’t know what he was hearing, but it was all too familiar.  He heard pieces of broken glass.
            From the distance, he saw a young girl falling. He didn’t know what he was doing, he only reacted.  It seemed that Mohinder Suresh had to become a hero.  He rushed forward, but something caught his eye that made him stopped and swallowed in fear.
            Hale didn’t know what was happening. All that she knew was falling.  She didn’t react. She was still in shock at what had taken place.  Death didn’t seem so bad to her at the moment. She anticipated falling to the ground to her demise.
            Just then, a miracle.  Just as she was a several feet away from the pavement, something caught hold of her shirt, sending a rip noise to her ears. What? she thought.
            The lion gripped Hale’s shirt in its mouth. It brought her safely to the ground. She landed on her hands and knees just like a normal feline cub. Hale was still in shock. The world has gone mad, she thought. It was a bit hard not to cringe at the sight of the massiveness of the lion, the female lion.
            “Thank you,” she said aloud as she sat on the street.
            The lion merely looked at her. It gave her a gaze that only a mother would.
            At least, I can say that I have one, thought Hale. Suddenly, the lion growled. Hale saw her staring up to where she fell from her apartment, she glanced in that direction. What she saw froze her heart, but suddenly felt aroused at the same time.
            Falling out the window, at a constant pace, was Sylar, but he wasn’t falling, he was gliding. He was gliding down to where Hale and the lion stood.  Her heart quickened, and Sylar could hear it.  He smiled inwardly.  If I can’t have you, then I will have your power.  It’ll be very useful for me when the time comes.
            Suddenly, the lion crouched down.  She growled at him, snarled, and bared her teeth.
            He hit the pavement without a sound as one of his knee’s was on the ground.  His stance only lasted a second.
            “Now what do we have here? Someone to save you? You can’t be saved. I’ve already have you,” he told her.
            “I chose that, and so did you,” she answered angrily.
            The loin growled once again.  She grabbed Hale, who was still sitting down.  She placed Hale behind her, then started to stride back and forth.
            Sylar went forward, but the lion stopped and glared at him with her fangs glimmering in the moonlight.
            Hale smiled, “She won’t let anything happen to me.”
            Sylar looked at the lion, unable to move.  He never fought against an animal.  They were different creatures. Still--when the chance came---he would do all that he could.
            “When did you get here,” Sylar asked the lion.
            She called me, I answered.
            Of course, Hale knew that Sylar couldn’t hear this, only she could. She planned to make use of it.
            Unbeknownst to either of them, there was a witness.  Mohinder Suresh gawked at what was taking place. Sylar he cried angrily inwardly.  Out of the places in New York, this is where he had to find him.  He didn’t know what to do. It seemed that girl was already be taken care of, by a lion, nonetheless.  Suddenly, Sylar looked his way.  Mohinder hurriedly ducked behind a vehicle, he looked at the brand, a Chevy Impala, hmm, nice.
            Lucky for him, Sylar didn’t see him.  His only concentration was marked on Hale.  The belief that they slept together that night was confounding.  He looked into her eyes, she didn’t hate him, not like the others.  She was still fighting against herself. Give in, he thought.
            Just then, the lion, charged forward.  Sylar stopped her, but he didn’t stop Hale.  She attacked him from the side and whacked him to the ground.  She leaped off of him to join her rescuer.
            Again, like Hale and Mohki, the lion and herself stalked Sylar.  He didn’t like it.  The lion was a much bigger creature than a mere house cat.
            Mohinder stared.  She has an ability! I wonder what it is…
            “Please--make your move, I’m getting bored,” teased Sylar.
            They lunged, but where they were about to hit the pavement, it turned into ice.  Claws and nails skittered across it.  Only the lion, Jas, landed on it.
            Run she cried to Hale.
            Hale rebounded off the car and started to run in the direction of Mohinder, but she didn’t get that far.
            Sirens and blaring red and blue lights sauntered her path.  She couldn’t run away from Jas, yes, that is her name, in the clutches of Sylar.
            She ran back towards her.  Her speed impressed Mohinder. What does she have as peeked from his hiding place.
            Just as she reached her, two darts were released into the air.
            As Hale turned--she was impaled by the darts. Her mouth agape in astonishment.  It hit her throat as she collapsed to the ground.  It was meant to hit the lion, but instead, hit her.
            Sylar looked on at the shocking event.  He looked at the police.  He backed away into the shadows as another two darts hit Jas.
            Mohinder came out of hiding, and angrily approached the men.
            What were you thinking? This is an innocent girl! She could’ve been killed.  That amount of tranquilizers is far too much for her body,” he cried angrily.
            “Listen, sir, we were aiming for the lion, and she got in the way. It was her own fault,” one of the men answered.
            Mohinder just gazed at them, fuming. “This wasn’t her fault.  She was trying to save her from--”
            He looked around.  Sylar was nowhere to be found.  How does he do that? Vanish into the night?
            “I’ll take care of her,” was all Mohinder could say to the men before picking Hale up to venture back to his apartment.
